The formation and evolution of field massive galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
The problem of the formation and evolution of field massive galaxies is briefly reviewed from an observational perspective. The motivations and the characteristics of the K20 survey are outlined. The redshift distribution ofKs < 20 galaxies, the evolution of the rest-frame Ks-band luminosity function and luminosity density to z ∼ 1.5, the nature and the role of the red galaxy population are presented. Such results are compared with the predictions of models of galaxy evolution.

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...
متن کاملScaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کاملThe Detection of a Red Sequence of Massive Field Galaxies
The existence of massive galaxies with strongly suppressed star formation at z ∼ 2.3, identified in a previous paper, suggests that a red sequence may already be in place beyond z = 2. In order to test this hypothesis, we study the rest-frame U − B color distribution of massive galaxies at 2 < z < 3. The sample is drawn from our near-infrared spectroscopic survey for massive galaxies. The color...
متن کاملThe Munich Near-infrared Cluster Survey (munics) – Number Density Evolution of Massive Field Galaxies to Z ∼ 1.2 as Derived from the K-band Selected Survey
We derive the number density evolution of massive field galaxies in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 1.2 using the K-band selected field galaxy sample from the Munich Near-IR Cluster Survey (MUNICS). We rely on spectroscopically calibrated photometric redshifts to determine distances and absolute magnitudes in the rest-frame K-band. To assign mass-to-light ratios, we use an approach which maximizes...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
